AI product notes: week of 5 October 2026
A weekly roundup of smaller AI product updates, release-note items, and admin changes worth tracking.
Smaller product updates do not always need a full article, but they can still matter if you own the platform, run the admin console, or build against the API.
Updates
- Anthropic: Anthropic commits $150 million over three years to American scientific discovery via Genesis (8 October 2026). Research institutions and national labs working in biology, chemistry, or materials science may be able to access Anthropic funding, compute credits, or Claude access through Genesis, making it worth watching for teams in those fields.
- Anthropic: Claude Code 2.1.293 adds Haiku 5.5 as default small model with broad reliability sweep (8 October 2026). Teams running Claude Code sub-agents automatically benefit from Haiku 5.5’s lower cost and larger context window without any configuration change, while the reliability fixes address a range of workflow and admin issues accumulated across enterprise deployments.
- OpenAI: Codex gets faster mid-task steering in the ChatGPT desktop app (8 October 2026). Developers running long Codex tasks can now redirect or correct them mid-flight without waiting for the current run to finish, reducing wasted compute and the frustration of watching an agent head in the wrong direction.
- Microsoft: Copilot interactive slides in PowerPoint heads to worldwide GA by mid-to-end October 2026 (8 October 2026). PowerPoint users on Copilot licences will soon get a one-click skill to produce interactive, audience-navigable slides for presentations and training sessions, no manual animation work required.
- Microsoft: Copilot Search adds conversational chat on Windows and web (8 October 2026). M365 users who find a document or page via Copilot Search can now ask follow-up questions about it in-place, reducing the copy-paste loop between search and chat that previously broke context.
- OpenAI: ChatGPT Voice switches to GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Astra reasoning and simplifies daily limits (7 October 2026). The removal of Instant/Medium/High Voice intelligence levels means any app or workflow that relied on selecting those settings will need to switch to the new model-and-effort-level controls, and Go plan users lose GPT-Live-1 access in favour of the mini tier.
- Anthropic: Claude Code 2.1.293 ships Haiku 5.5 as the default Haiku model and a broad reliability sweep (7 October 2026). Claude Code users running subagent pipelines automatically get the cheaper, faster Haiku 5.5 as their default small model, and a memory leak in long-running MCP connections is patched, relevant for anyone running persistent HTTP MCP servers alongside Claude Code.
- Microsoft: Visual Studio Code 1.141 ships major Copilot agent updates including session grids and terminal sandboxing (7 October 2026). Developers running Copilot agents inside VS Code gain sandboxed terminal execution and session-grid management, which meaningfully reduce the blast radius of agent mistakes and make multi-session agent workflows easier to supervise.
- Anthropic: Claude Code 2.1.291 fixes cloud-session permission drops and lost last-session messages on quit (6 October 2026). Teams running Claude Code cloud sessions that saw permission prompts go unanswered or found their session logs truncated should update to v2.1.291 immediately.
- Microsoft: Microsoft confirms Copilot Teams Phone AI calling receptionist, Word citation support, and Android Office app Copilot in October 2026 rollout (5 October 2026). The Teams Phone AI receptionist is the headline addition for voice-heavy organisations; Word citations reduce one of the most common complaints about AI-generated document edits; Android Office Copilot extends the mobile workforce experience.
- OpenAI: OpenAI to open-source the textGrain watermark technology after its phased EU rollout (5 October 2026). Once open-sourced, organisations and regulators will be able to build their own textGrain detectors, extending content-provenance verification beyond OpenAI-approved researchers.
