ChatGPT's Library now surfaces Google Drive files and folders directly, with side-by-side editing and write-back
ChatGPT can now browse, @mention, and edit Google Drive files from its Library, with side-by-side Docs/Sheets/Slides and conditional write-back.
From 13 August 2026, ChatGPT can browse your Google Drive from inside its Library panel, pull any file into a conversation with an @mention, and keep a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide open beside the chat while you work. Where you have the right permissions, it can also write changes back to the source file directly.
This is not the same as the Drive connection that has existed for a while. ChatGPT has been able to reach into Drive and read files since earlier integrations, and a June 2026 update added the ability to create and edit Docs, Sheets, and Slides rather than just read them. What changed on 13 August is the surface: you can now browse Drive from Library without leaving ChatGPT, reference files by @mention in the composer, and work with a document open beside the conversation rather than switching between tabs.
What is actually new
Drive in Library. If the Google Drive app is connected, your Drive appears directly in ChatGPT’s Library, including files and folders shared with you. You can browse and open them without re-uploading anything. Shared Drives are not included in this first release; the initial scope covers My Drive and items shared directly with your account.
Side-by-side document view. When you open a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide from Library or by @mention, it stays visible beside the conversation. You can ask ChatGPT to summarise, analyse, compare, or rework the content while you read along. Previously, doing this in practice meant keeping a separate browser tab open and copying content back and forth.
Folder-level work. You can point ChatGPT at a folder and ask it to work across the files inside. Your content stays connected to Drive throughout, so returning to the original is straightforward.
Write-back. Where supported and where you have authorised it, ChatGPT can push edits back to the source file in Drive. This is conditional on your permissions and on the file type. Some collaboration features are not yet supported, for example track changes for collaborators is not available at rollout.
What this means for you
The practical shift is that the browser tab for docs.google.com becomes optional for a meaningful portion of a knowledge worker’s day. If your work involves reading reports, drafting in Docs, updating Sheets, or reviewing Slides, you can do all of that from a single ChatGPT window, with the AI alongside rather than in a separate tool.
The @mention approach in particular is worth noting. Rather than uploading a file or copying its content into a prompt, you type @ and select the file by name. That is a small interaction change but a significant one in terms of friction: the document stays in Drive, stays versioned, and stays connected to everything else that references it.
Who gets it and when
The rollout covers Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Business accounts on the web, across both the Chat and Work toggles. Mobile support will follow, with no date confirmed.
Free accounts have no app connections at all, including Google Drive.
A note on admin controls. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, the Google Drive app is off by default and must be enabled by an administrator before any of this is available. Business workspaces have it on by default. A Google Workspace administrator may also need to re-authorise Drive scopes before write actions work for anyone in the organisation.
If your account was connected to Drive before 15 June 2026, you may need to reconnect and approve updated permissions to unlock the write actions that were added in that earlier update.
One thing to be aware of on sync
Separate from the Library integration, OpenAI has also changed how individual Drive sync works. From 10 August 2026, new individually authorised sync connections are no longer available. Existing individual-user sync connections were disabled on 14 August 2026, and deletion of associated synced data began at that point. Administrator-managed sync for Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts is unaffected.
If you were relying on personal sync to keep Drive content searchable inside ChatGPT, it is worth checking with your workspace administrator about whether admin-managed sync is configured.
The broader picture
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are all moving in the same direction on cloud document integration: native browsing, in-context editing, and write-back rather than read-only access. The August 2026 update puts ChatGPT’s Drive experience on a par with what competitors have been building, while tying it into the Library UI that OpenAI has been developing as a central place to manage your working context.
The plugin prerequisite is still there, so this surfaces an existing connection rather than creating something entirely new. But the shift from “ChatGPT can access Drive if you ask it to” to “Drive is just there in Library alongside your other files” is a meaningful change in how the two tools relate to each other day to day.
