Google I/O 2026: Welcome to the Agentic Gemini Era
Google I/O 2026 marked a decisive shift from AI assistants to autonomous agents, with new models, platforms, and consumer tools built around the agentic Gemini era.
Google I/O 2026 had a clear, singular message running through every announcement: the age of the AI chatbot is over. What comes next is agents. Persistent, autonomous, task-executing agents that run in the background, connect across Google’s entire product stack, and actually do things on your behalf.
CEO Sundar Pichai called it the “agentic Gemini era” from the stage at Shoreline Amphitheatre, and for once the framing matched the substance. This was not a keynote full of demos that will ship in 18 months. Much of what was announced is available now.
Here is what was revealed, and what it actually means for you.
New Models: Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini Omni
Google shipped two significant new models at I/O. Gemini 3.5 Flash is the first model in the new 3.5 family, and it is the one most people will interact with first. It is already the default model powering AI Mode in Search globally, and it is available via the Gemini API and Google AI Studio today.
The numbers are worth noting. Gemini 3.5 Flash outperforms Gemini 3.1 Pro on key agentic benchmarks, runs four times faster than comparable frontier models in terms of output tokens per second, and typically costs less than half as much. For developers building agents that need to reason across long tasks, that combination of speed and cost matters a great deal. Gemini 3.5 Pro is currently in testing and expected next month.
The second model, Gemini Omni, takes a different approach. It can generate output in any modality from any input, starting with video. Think of it as a model designed for creation and editing across text, image, and video from a single unified architecture. The first model in the Omni family, Gemini Omni Flash, is available now.
Google also unveiled its 8th-generation TPUs, taking a dual-chip approach with the 8t for large-scale training and the 8i for inference. Both deliver up to twice the performance-per-watt of the previous generation.
Google Antigravity: The Platform Underneath Everything
If there is one product that ties together everything announced at I/O, it is Google Antigravity. This is Google’s agent-first development platform, and it just got significantly more capable.
Antigravity 2.0 ships with a new CLI that lets developers orchestrate specialised subagents for complex workflows, with built-in sandboxing, credential masking, and hardened Git policies baked in. For developers who have been building with AI tools but find themselves hitting the ceiling of what a “coding assistant” can do, Antigravity is Google’s answer to that gap.
The bigger announcement for developers is Managed Agents in the Gemini API. With a single API call, you can now spin up an agent that reasons, uses tools, and executes code in an isolated Linux environment. It is powered by the Antigravity agent harness and built on Gemini 3.5 Flash. This significantly lowers the barrier to building production-grade agents.
Google Cloud customers get access to Antigravity through Agent Platform, with standard Google Cloud data privacy protections applied by default.
For enterprises, Google made a pointed economic argument: organisations processing around one trillion tokens per day could save over $1 billion annually by shifting 80% of workloads from competing frontier models to Gemini 3.5 Flash. That is a direct pitch at OpenAI and Anthropic’s enterprise customers.
Search Gets Agents Too
Google Search picked up what Google described as its biggest upgrade to the search box in over 25 years. AI Mode, which surpassed one billion monthly users in its first year with queries doubling every quarter, now runs on Gemini 3.5 Flash globally.
More significantly, Search is getting its own agent layer. Users will be able to create and manage information agents that run 24/7 in the background, monitoring the web including blogs, news sites, social feeds, and real-time data, and surfacing what is relevant to you. This is a meaningful shift from a tool you query to a service that monitors on your behalf.
Shopping: The Universal Cart
One of the more concrete announcements for everyday users is Universal Cart. Google is building a persistent, cross-platform shopping basket that works across Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail. The underlying idea is agentic commerce: AI that can discover, evaluate, and purchase goods on your behalf across the web, not just within one retailer’s ecosystem.
This is still rolling out, but the direction is clear. Shopping online may start to look a lot more like briefing an agent than browsing a website.
What This Means for Everyday Users
For most people, the changes will show up gradually across products you already use. Search will feel more like a service that works for you in the background. The Gemini app now includes Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal agent that can take actions on your behalf, and Daily Brief, which pulls together your inbox, calendar, and tasks each morning with suggested next steps.
These are the kinds of features that sound abstract until you use them. The shift from “ask it a question” to “it already handled it” is the real change Google is signalling.
What This Means for Developers
Beyond Antigravity, Google announced WebMCP, a proposed open web standard that allows developers to expose structured tools so browser-based AI agents can interact with them more reliably. An origin trial begins in Chrome 149. This sits alongside Modern Web Guidance, which provides coding agents with expert-vetted skills for over 100 use cases.
AI Studio can now take you from a text prompt to a fully native Android app on your own device in minutes, removing what used to be a significant hardware and knowledge barrier to Android development.
On Transparency
Google also reported that SynthID, its invisible AI watermarking technology, has now been applied to over one hundred billion images and videos, plus sixty thousand years of audio. OpenAI, Kakao, and Eleven Labs are all adopting SynthID, which is an encouraging sign of cross-industry movement on provenance and transparency.
The Bigger Picture
Two years ago, Google was processing roughly 9.7 trillion tokens a month. Today that figure is over 3.2 quadrillion. The scale of AI adoption inside Google’s own systems has grown at a pace that is difficult to visualise.
What I/O 2026 made clear is that Google is no longer in the “show you what AI can do” phase. It is in the “ship it and make it useful” phase. The emphasis on agents that act, not just respond, represents a genuine architectural shift in how Google thinks about its products.
The Google AI Ultra subscription, available now at $100 per month, gives power users a 5x higher usage limit in Antigravity compared to the AI Pro plan, for those who want to push the capabilities furthest.
Google I/O 2026 was less about announcing the future and more about declaring that the transition has already started. The agentic era is not a roadmap slide. It is the default.
