Google is giving eligible college students a free year of its AI plans, plus new Gemini study tools
Eligible college students worldwide can claim one free year of Google AI Pro or Plus, alongside new Gemini study tools rolling out from late August 2026.
Google announced on 19 August 2026 that eligible college students worldwide can claim one free year of a Google AI plan, timed to the northern-hemisphere back-to-school period. Alongside the free offer, the company is rolling out a suite of new Gemini study tools: a dedicated student hub, study notebooks, interactive 3D visualisations, and Deep Research inside Gemini Live.
What’s the free plan offer?
The deal splits along geography. Students in the United States get Google AI Pro free for 12 months. That plan normally costs $19.99 per month and includes Gemini Spark, 4x usage limits, Google app integrations, 5 TB of storage, and Google Health Premium.
Students outside the US, in over 140 markets where Google AI Plus is available (with the exception of Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong, and Tunisia), get Google AI Plus free for 12 months. That plan ordinarily costs $4.99 per month and includes Gemini Omni, twice the standard usage limits, and 400 GB of cloud storage. International students also receive bundled discounts on Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium.
To claim the offer, you need to head to gemini.google.com/students, verify your student status through SheerID using a valid school-issued email address, and provide a payment method. The deadline to redeem is 31 December 2026. One important thing to be aware of: the free period does not end quietly. After 12 months, the subscription rolls into a paid plan automatically at the full monthly rate unless you cancel first.
You need to be 18 or older with a personal Google Account to qualify.
The new study tools in the Gemini app
The free plan is the headline, but the more substantive change for day-to-day student life is what Google is building into the Gemini app itself.
Student hub. The new hub at gemini.google.com/students acts as a single entry point for academic work inside Gemini. From there, students can create flashcards and practice quizzes, organise research, and connect academic deadlines to Google Calendar.
Study notebooks. Google first launched notebooks in June 2026. The August 2026 update adds meaningful new layers. You can upload your lecture notes and course materials, and Gemini will identify knowledge gaps through a diagnostic quiz, then build a study plan around what needs work. Short lessons and follow-up quizzes are generated from your own materials, and a progress dashboard tracks how you are getting on. In the coming weeks, notebooks will also be able to read exam and assignment dates from a syllabus and schedule them into Google Calendar, with your permission.
Interactive visualisations. Gemini can now generate functional 3D simulations directly in response to a prompt. Ask “show me how DNA works in 3D” and you get a rotatable, zoomable 3D DNA structure. Other examples include watching a pendulum transfer energy, or exploring financial data in an interactive table. The visualisations are not locked to science subjects; Gemini selects tables, grids, or simulations based on the subject matter and how you phrase the request. These are rolling out globally to personal and school-issued Google accounts, subject to age requirements and usage limits.
Deep Research in Gemini Live. Deep Research, which generates multi-step research reports, is being integrated into Gemini Live so students can trigger it by voice. You describe what you need, walk away, and Gemini notifies you when the report is ready. You can then discuss the output aloud, asking follow-up questions without having to type anything. It is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for anyone who does a lot of research-heavy coursework.
What does this mean for you?
If you are a college student, the free year is worth taking seriously. Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month represents nearly $240 of value over 12 months for US students, and even the international AI Plus plan is a useful reduction in friction if you are already using Gemini regularly. The study notebook and hub features are the kind of tools that could genuinely change how you prepare for exams, provided you actually use them consistently rather than leaving them unopened after the first week.
The auto-renewal is the one watch-out. Set a calendar reminder for month 11. Google will charge the full rate from month 13 unless you cancel, and that is easy to miss.
If you are an educator, Google is also expanding Gemini inside Google Classroom. From 10 August 2026, Gemini in Classroom is available to K-12 and higher education students of all ages who have been granted access by their administrator. Teachers can draft lesson plans and tailor the AI experience to their curriculum, and students can use the Gemini tab to turn class materials into interactive experiences.
The bigger picture
Google is not doing this out of pure generosity. Gemini crossed 1 billion monthly active users in mid-2026, and student acquisition is a deliberate long-term play. A student who builds habits around one AI assistant during college is a durable user for years after graduation. OpenAI ran a similar move with ChatGPT’s free tier for students, and Google is matching that logic directly.
What is notable about this particular push is the emphasis on not just providing answers. Nick Fox, Google’s SVP of Knowledge and Information, has been explicit that the company is trying to position these tools on the side of genuine learning rather than shortcutting it. The diagnostic quiz-to-lesson-to-progress-dashboard structure of study notebooks is designed around spaced repetition and gap identification, not just retrieval. Whether that holds up in practice will depend on how students actually use it, but the design intention is clear.
For now, the offer is live, the tools are rolling out, and the redemption window runs until 31 December 2026.
