OpenAI is retiring the DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT on 30 August 2026: download your images before then

OpenAI shuts down the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT on 30 August 2026. Save any images you want to keep before the deadline.

If you have images sitting inside the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT, you have a deadline to know about. On 30 August 2026, OpenAI is retiring that interface, and any images you have not downloaded before then may no longer be accessible once it closes.

OpenAI announced the retirement on 31 July 2026 in the ChatGPT release notes, with the same notice appearing in the help article covering images in ChatGPT. The message is brief: the official DALL·E GPT is going away, users should save what they want to keep, and the replacement is ChatGPT Images.

What exactly is being retired?

It helps to be precise here, because this is not OpenAI switching off AI image generation in ChatGPT.

A GPT, in ChatGPT terms, is a preconfigured version of the assistant built around a specific task. OpenAI published an official one whose sole job was generating images using DALL·E. That specific GPT, published by OpenAI, is what closes on 30 August 2026.

Image generation itself continues. OpenAI’s newer tool, ChatGPT Images, has been the default experience for image creation in ChatGPT since late 2025. If you have asked ChatGPT to generate an image in recent months without deliberately opening a special GPT first, you were already using it. It runs on newer models (gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini) and saves everything you create to a dedicated gallery.

Any custom GPTs you or others have built with image generation enabled are unaffected. This retirement applies only to the official DALL·E GPT published by OpenAI.

What should you do right now?

Go into the official DALL·E GPT and download any images you want to keep. OpenAI has not published a detailed statement on exactly what happens to stored images after 30 August 2026, but access to that interface will end, and the safe assumption is that anything not saved beforehand will become inaccessible. Every reputable source covering this announcement is giving the same advice: download before the deadline.

After that, you do not need to do anything else. ChatGPT Images is already available on all tiers, including free accounts. You will find it in the normal ChatGPT interface. Your workflow does not change meaningfully.

Why is OpenAI doing this?

DALL·E 3 was OpenAI’s flagship image model from 2023 and was a significant step forward when it launched. But gpt-image-1, the model powering ChatGPT Images, is a different generation of technology entirely.

The improvements are meaningful in practice. Text rendering is the most obvious one: DALL·E 3 was notoriously unreliable at producing legible words inside an image, while gpt-image-1 handles it consistently. Beyond that, because ChatGPT Images is native to the conversation, it can reference what was discussed several messages earlier, pick up elements from an image you uploaded, and iterate on its own output without losing context. It also supports editing existing images, not just generating new ones.

The broader DALL·E story had already moved on before this announcement. OpenAI removed dall-e-2 and dall-e-3 from the API on 12 May 2026, having flagged that deprecation in November 2025. The retirement of the ChatGPT GPT on 30 August 2026 closes the last visible DALL·E surface in OpenAI’s consumer products.

GPT Image went viral on social media after its release in March 2025, largely because of how well it handled requests for images in the style of Studio Ghibli. The stable release of GPT Image 2 followed on 21 April 2026. This is not a feature OpenAI is quietly sunsetting; it is one they have been actively developing and investing in.

What does the new experience look like?

ChatGPT Images is available at every subscription tier. The standard experience, which covers creation, editing, text in images, and instruction-following, is open to free users. A more advanced variant called “Images with thinking” adds visible reasoning steps to the generation process and is limited to Plus, Pro, and Business plans for now, with Enterprise and Edu access to follow.

If you have been using DALL·E 3 to generate images and found it frustrating for specific tasks (particularly anything involving text, fine detail, or iterating on a concept across a conversation), the newer tool is genuinely better at those things. It is worth spending some time with it before the DALL·E GPT closes.

The short version

Download any images from the official DALL·E GPT before 30 August 2026. After that date, access to that interface will end. For everything else, ChatGPT Images is already there, already better, and already free to use.
