Safeway grocery shopping is now available inside ChatGPT
OpenAI and Albertsons have launched a Safeway plugin for ChatGPT that turns recipes or plain requests into a grocery cart, ready for checkout.
Safeway grocery shopping is now available inside ChatGPT
OpenAI and Albertsons Companies have launched a Safeway shopping experience directly inside ChatGPT. From 5 August 2026, shoppers can describe what they want to eat, paste in a recipe, or simply ask ChatGPT to reorder their usual weekly shop, and the assistant will build a Safeway grocery cart for them. When the cart is ready, shoppers are handed off to Safeway’s own site to complete checkout.
It is the first time a major US grocery chain has been woven into ChatGPT’s interface at this level, and Albertsons has confirmed plans to extend the same capability to six additional banners: Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME and Tom Thumb.
How it actually works
The integration runs through a ChatGPT plugin. To get started:
- Open ChatGPT, go to Plugins in the sidebar, search for “Safeway” and connect your Safeway account.
- In any new conversation, type @Safeway to surface the plugin.
- Make a request in plain English: “Help me plan a quick pasta dinner for four,” “What do I need for weekend brunch?” or “Reorder my usual weekly list.”
- ChatGPT identifies matching products, surfaces relevant savings and assembles a basket. You can review, adjust or remove items before anything is confirmed.
- Once you are happy with the cart, you are directed to Safeway’s platform to pay.
The whole flow can take as little as four minutes, according to Albertsons, compared with a traditional browse-and-search experience. Checkout does not happen inside ChatGPT itself, so you will still land on Safeway’s site at the end, but the discovery and planning steps are handled entirely in the conversation.
What this means for you as a shopper
The practical value here is about reducing friction. If you know you want to cook a specific recipe but dread translating it into a product search across dozens of category pages, asking ChatGPT to do that translation is genuinely faster. The assistant can also factor in store brands and current promotions as it builds the basket, so it is not just matching ingredients mechanically.
You stay in control throughout. ChatGPT makes suggestions; you decide what stays in the cart. Nothing is purchased without you reviewing it first and completing checkout on Safeway’s own platform, which means your payment details and account security sit where they always have.
For households that do a regular weekly shop, the “reorder my list” prompt is probably the most immediately useful feature. Rather than hunting through a previous order, you can ask ChatGPT to rebuild it, adjust quantities, or swap items based on what is on sale.
The bigger picture: Albertsons is rebuilding around AI
The Safeway plugin is the most visible part of a much broader AI programme at Albertsons Companies, which operates more than 2,200 stores and serves around 36 million customers each week.
Internally, select teams are using ChatGPT Enterprise alongside custom OpenAI API integrations to streamline merchandising decisions. Albertsons has built agents that connect to internal data and can analyse product categories, generate promotional strategies and evaluate trading performance. Karthik Iyer, the company’s VP of Product and Engineering, described it as “building intelligent agents that analyse categories, generate strategies, and evaluate impact.”
Store-level staff can ask ChatGPT what is happening in their department and receive a concrete recommendation, for example that it is time to change a display or run a local promotion. That kind of operational guidance, generated from live data rather than a weekly report, is where much of the internal value sits.
Behind the scenes, Albertsons is combining predictive models with generative AI to produce what the company calls explainable, data-driven recommendations. The aim is to give merchants enough context to make faster decisions without having to dig through multiple data sources manually.
Why groceries are a natural fit for AI assistants
Data from dunnhumby’s February 2026 United States Consumer Trends Tracker suggests shoppers are more open to using AI for grocery purchases than for most other retail categories. That makes sense: grocery shopping is repetitive, the stakes per item are low, and most people already have a rough sense of what they want. AI assistance with the translation from “I want to make a roast chicken dinner” to a filled basket is a well-defined, bounded problem, which is exactly the kind of task conversational AI handles well.
The Albertsons integration was featured at OpenAI’s DevDay earlier in 2026, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted it as a demonstration of the company’s new agentic capabilities. The multi-agent architecture underpinning the experience is also designed with future extensibility in mind, meaning Albertsons could connect the shopping assistant to other platforms and services over time.
Albertsons is also participating in OpenAI’s Advertising Pilot Programme, which suggests the commercial relationship between the two companies extends beyond the plugin itself.
What to watch next
The immediate rollout covers Safeway. The planned expansion to Albertsons, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME and Tom Thumb banners will bring the same experience to a much larger footprint. No firm dates have been given for those additional launches beyond the confirmation that they are planned.
The larger question is whether checkout will eventually move fully inside ChatGPT, removing the handoff to Safeway’s site entirely. That step would require tighter payment and account integration between OpenAI and Albertsons, and neither party has announced it. For now, the plugin handles everything up to the point of payment, and then passes control back to the retailer.
If you shop at Safeway regularly and use ChatGPT, it is worth trying. The setup takes a couple of minutes and the plugin is already live.
