Google has quietly shipped something that anyone who manages a Google Workspace domain will want to know about. On 17 August 2026, the Google Workspace Updates blog announced Admin Assist, a pair of Gemini-powered features built directly into the Google Admin Console. If you hold a Super Admin role on a Business edition account, they are already switched on for you.

What Admin Assist actually does

There are two distinct capabilities bundled under this name, and it is worth understanding them separately because they solve different problems.

The Gemini Sidepanel sits inside the One Google Bar, the persistent header that runs across most pages of the Admin Console. Click it and you get a conversational interface. You can describe what you are trying to do, ask about best practices, or request step-by-step guidance on a task, without leaving the page you are already on. Think of it as having a knowledgeable colleague available on the side of your screen rather than having to alt-tab to a Help Centre article and piece things together yourself.

Search Overviews work differently. When you type a question into the main Admin Console search bar, rather than returning a list of links, Admin Assist synthesises relevant Google Workspace Help Centre articles into a single, direct answer with actionable next steps. The answer comes to you, not the other way around.

Both features are on by default for Super Admins on eligible Business SKUs. There is nothing to enable.

Who gets it, and who does not

The eligibility here is specific and worth reading carefully.

Admin Assist is available to Super Admins on Google Workspace Business edition accounts. It is explicitly not available to Delegated Admins, those with scoped or limited admin roles. There is also no end-user impact; this is purely an admin-surface change.

If you manage a domain as a Delegated Admin, you will not see these features regardless of the edition your organisation is on. If you are a Super Admin on a Business edition, both features should be visible to you now across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.

Why this matters in practice

The Admin Console has always been capable, but navigating it under pressure has rarely been straightforward. When something breaks or a policy needs adjusting quickly, the typical workflow involves searching the Help Centre in a separate tab, reading through documentation that may or may not be current, and then returning to the console to apply whatever you found. That context-switching adds friction at exactly the moment you want to be moving fast.

Admin Assist collapses that loop. With Search Overviews, a question typed directly into the console returns a synthesised answer drawn from Help Centre content. With the Sidepanel, you can ask follow-up questions and get guided through a task interactively, without losing your place in the console itself.

This is not a dramatic reinvention of how administration works. It is a practical reduction in the number of steps between a problem and a resolution.

The broader direction

This launch fits a pattern Google has been building towards through 2026. In April 2026, Google introduced Workspace Intelligence, which gave Gemini a real-time grounding in data across Gmail, Chat, Calendar, and Drive. That same month, Google streamlined Gemini Enterprise admin controls by surfacing service toggles and data sharing settings directly within the Generative AI section of the Admin Console.

Admin Assist is the next step in that progression: Gemini moving from something admins configure to something admins actively use as part of their day-to-day workflow.

What to do now

If you are a Super Admin on a Google Workspace Business edition, open the Admin Console and try typing a question into the search bar. You should see a Search Overview appear above the standard results. The Sidepanel is accessible from the One Google Bar on most console pages.

If you manage multiple domains or have a team of admins, it is worth noting the Delegated Admin exclusion and setting expectations accordingly. The feature is not something you can grant to scoped admins, at least not at this stage.

No configuration is needed to get started. The features are on, and they are worth exploring the next time you are troubleshooting a policy or trying to remember which settings panel controls what.
